Video:
Reading: Ferder, ch. 1; optional: Wilkens, How to Read the Bible
Practices: Continue your practice of silence, try to be as regular as possible, if you’ve fallen try cutting back on your time and start over. Continue with journaling and daily examen as regularly as possible. This month pick one or two of the following stories and spend time with it every day: Healing at the pool (John 5:1-18) Storm on the lake (Matt. 14:22-33), Peter’s betrayal (Mark 14: 66-72)
Assignment: Pick one of the stories you spent time with this month and write a midrash. As explained in the video and the attached handout, a midrash is a creative expansion of a story from Scripture. Based on your spending time with the story you will write your own version of what happened.
Reflection Questions: 1) What was your practice like this month? What helped you stay with it? What tripped you up? What are you going to commit to doing to make yourself do it? 2) What insights did you find from your practice? 3) Share your midrash along with your other reflections. (Give it a try, it doesn’t have to be long. Whatever you do will be good.)
Tip of the week: Your life is composed of many little stories. Reflect on some of the stories of your life and how they’ve played out, what you’ve learned, how God has been present.
